What Is Racial Equity?

Nov. 2015 Meeting

It was decided that our November meeting/gathering would be to participate in the Anti-Racism and Nonviolence training being cosponsored by NCBI, NAACP and the Monterey Peace and Justice Center on Saturday, November 14 from 2:00-5:00 at the Oldemeyer Center. The workshop will include:

  • Identifying and welcoming social identities present today (race, class, gender, LGBTQ, religion, age, etc.)
  • An introduction to Allyship
  • Brainstorming local issues. Where do you notice racial injustice in this county?
  • Where/what issues do you want to engage as an ally? What issues do you want to invite others in as allies?
  • Next steps – Resources and opportunities for involvement with local groups (NCBI anti-racism series; Peace Resource Center nonviolence training; NAACP working committees; #BlackLivesMatter Seaside; Stand Up for Racial Justice Santa Cruz; and more.)

October 2015 Meeting

Our next gathering takes place on Oct 17 from 5- 8 p.m. at the Oldemeyer Center in Seaside.

There will be a panel discussion on Why Black Lives Matter is Exactly the Right Term (as opposed to All Lives Matter). We will then break out in small groups where we can do more personal work and make further connections.

A large part of the evening will focus on hearing about opportunities to take action to eliminate racism in our community.
