3. Introduction

Introduction and Overview of Session/Module 3

Learning Objectives:

Upon completing this session, you will:

  • Understand the costs of racism to you as a white person through reading, listening, and discussing stories from Combined Destinies: Whites Sharing Grief About Racism by Ann Jealous and Caroline Haskell .
  • Identify costs of racism in your own lives and make commitments to address these costs.

Combined Destinies: Whites Sharing Grief About Racism by Ann Jealous and Caroline Haskell is the centerpiece of Session 3 of the Workshop.  The anthology is organized topically according to the following chapters: Separation from Caregivers and Family Members, Sameness, Guilt, Separation during Childhood and Adolescence, Shame, Silence, Separation from Adults (Acquaintances, Friends & Lovers), and Resistance and Freedom.

Reading and listening to these stories can serve as a means of connecting with our own losses that result in being born, growing up, and living in a racist society.
